How to play the online piano

Play Piano Live’s online piano is a full 88-key keyboard built on recordings of a real concert grand. Every key you press is played with the nearest real piano sample, shaped by how hard you play, with a natural concert-hall reverb. It loads the middle of the keyboard first, so you can start playing within a second.

Use ← and → to move both rows down or up an octave, hold Space as the sustain pedal and hold Shift to play louder. On a touch screen, slide your finger across the keys for a glissando, and touch nearer the bottom of a key to play it louder.

Using a MIDI keyboard

Connect a USB or Bluetooth MIDI keyboard, press MIDI and allow access when your browser asks. Velocity and the sustain pedal come straight from your instrument. Web MIDI works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera on desktop and Android. Safari does not support it yet, so on an iPhone play by touch instead. Our guide to connecting a MIDI keyboard covers drivers, latency and troubleshooting.

Record, replay and export

Press Record, play, then press Stop. Play take replays it with the same timing and dynamics, MIDI downloads a standard MIDI file for GarageBand, Logic, FL Studio, Ableton or MuseScore, and Practice it opens your recording as falling notes so you can learn it back.

Jam mode with GrooveForte backing tracks

Choose one of the scales marked ♪ jam. The keys that belong to the scale glow gold and the root note is marked in pink, and the matching backing track from the GrooveForte YouTube channel appears below the piano. It is the fastest way to start improvising: as long as you stay on gold keys, every note fits.

Browsers only allow audio after you interact with the page, so press any key first. Check that your device isn’t muted (on iPhone, flip the silent switch off) and that the volume slider is up.

Why does it lag a little?

Wireless headphones add delay. Wired headphones or speakers give the tightest response. On Windows, Chrome usually has the lowest audio latency.
